I
am 65 years old and have been a Raleigh/Wake County native for 59
years. My wife, Duden, and I have two grown children,
Eleanor and Kemp. Our
children were educated in the Raleigh Public School system
from the first through the 12th grades. I went to grammar
school from the first through the fifth grades and junior
high school in Raleigh before going away to high school,
college and graduate school. I have a Bachelor of Science
degree from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, and a Masters
Degree in Business from Wharton School of Finance, University
of Pennsylvania.
My
professional career after graduate school began with Wachovia
Bank. I was located in Raleigh and Winston Salem and headed
the commercial real estate mortgage divisions in both of
those cities. After leaving Wachovia in 1972 and for the
next 18 years, I developed about 4,000 housing units (apartments,
single family homes, and townhouses) from Richmond, Virginia
to Savannah, Georgia.
All
of the properties developed and/or constructed are excellent
examples of how to maintain the environment while providing
housing. Some local examples of my environmentally friendly
developments are the Woods of North Bend, Summit at Avent
Ferry, and Hidden Oaks apartments in Raleigh; the Stafford
and Thistledown town homes and Whitehall cluster homes in
Raleigh; the Oak Hollow and Page Mill apartments in Cary;
the Pine Winds and Bryan Woods apartments in Garner, the
Woods Edge and Park Ridge apartments in Durham; and the
Bradford Place apartments in Chapel Hill.
From 2001 through 2004, I served on the Raleigh City Council.
I was appointed Chairman of the Comprehensive Planning Committee
which handles the difficult zoning, site and subdivision
applications for the Council. For the previous seven years, I served on the
Raleigh Planning Commission (the last three as Chairman).
This is a board appointed by the Raleigh City Council
Wake County Commissioners. It reviews applications for real
estate zoning changes and site/subdivision applications
and gives its recommendation to the City Council for final
approval.
I am pleased to currently serve in the North Carolina Senate representing the 15th District. I have been appointed to the following Senate committees:
- Appropriations – General Government
- Ways and Means
- Finance
- Commerce
- Education - Higher Education
- Joint Transportation Over-Site Committee
The Transportation Select Committee is directly involved with DOT. These transportation assignments give District 15 residents direct input into the state’s funding of the Triangle’s critical highway and transportation needs.
